All Indians going to the US need a visa to work or travel in the United
States.There are two major visa categories: Immigrant and Non-Immigrant. Non-Immigrant
visas are issued to those who want to work in the US temporarily. This section describes
the various non-immigrant visas and the procedure to obtain them.
Different types of non-immigrant visas
H VISAS
H-1B Visas are
applicable to persons in a specialty occupation that requires the theoretical and
practical application of a body of highly specialized knowledge requiring completion of a
specific course of higher education.
- H-2A Visas apply
to temporary or seasonal agricultural workers.
- H-2B
Visasare applicable to temporary or seasonal agricultural workers
- H-3 Visas are
for trainees other than those in the medical or academic fields. This classification also
applies to practical training in the education of handicapped children.
- H-4 Visas are awarded to persons who are dependents of H Visa holders
L VISAThe L visa is issued to intra-company transfers who, within the three preceding years, have
been employed abroad continuously for one year, and who will be employed by a branch,
parent, affiliate, or subsidiary of that same employer in the U.S. in a managerial,
executive, or specialized knowledge capacity.
O VISA
O-1 Visas apply to persons who have extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education,
business, or athletics, or extraordinary achievements in the motion picture and television
field.
O-2 Visas are for persons
accompanying the O-1 Visa Holder.
